Fountain Valley wasn't always Fountain Valley. Thomas B. Talbert settled the area around 1896, buying up peat and swampland and opening a general store — the town that grew up around it was called Talbert, and residents had their own nickname for it: Gospel Swamps. When the city incorporated in 1957, it took the name Fountain Valley instead, after the unusually high water table and the artesian wells that came with it. Mile Square Park, one of the county's most-used parks today, was a U.S. Navy airfield during World War II before it became 640 acres of open space in 1967.
