Bookkeeping for the businesses of Little Arabia.

Brookhurst Street, from Ball Road to Broadway — the first officially designated Arab American business district in the United States, kept by a bookkeeper nearby in Garden Grove.

In August 2022, after years of advocacy from the Arab American Civic Council, the Anaheim City Council formally recognized the stretch of Brookhurst Street from Ball Road to Broadway as Little Arabia — the first city in the country to give an Arab American business corridor that kind of official designation. The community had been building there for decades before the sign went up: Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, Yemeni, and Egyptian-owned restaurants, bakeries, halal markets, and cafes, about ten minutes from Disneyland but a world away from it.

A business district built on food, family, and import

Walk Brookhurst through Little Arabia and the business mix is distinct: Middle Eastern restaurants and bakeries, hookah lounges, halal grocers and butchers, import shops carrying goods you won't find anywhere else in Orange County. A lot of these are family-run, some for multiple generations, with the kind of inventory and cash-flow patterns that don't fit a generic small-business chart of accounts — imported goods with long lead times, halal certification considerations, a restaurant scene built around family recipes rather than a franchise playbook.
